We Are The Ocean, an Essex-based post-hardcore/alt.rock band, is commemorating the tenth anniversary of their second album, Go Now And Live, with a limited-edition vinyl reissue of the album.
The follow-up to 2010 debut Cutting Our Teeth, the album was released in April 2011 on Hassle Records. It will now be reissued on vinyl (in a limited edition of 500 copies) to commemorate the band’s tenth anniversary of being in existence. In addition to significant singles such as The Waiting Room and What It Feels Like, this new edition will include the rare additional track Distances, which was previously unavailable.
As a way of commemorating the occasion, singer/guitarist Liam Cromby shared his thoughts on the album’s creation and release and its impact on the band as a whole.According to its frontman, before starting work on Go Now And Live, the band had just released a four-track EP that included some of their most melodic tracks to date, including Lucky Ones and Playing My Heart.
MayDay Parade
Besides Funeral For A Friend, we’d been on the road with Mayday Parade, Canterbury, and Straight Lines – bands that were known for their catchy, melodic melodies.” We also had a new traveling crew with us at the time, which introduced us to some new music, including bands such as The Draft and Hot Water Music, which we thoroughly enjoyed. At the time, we were also big fans of The Police and The Beatles, among other bands.
Energized and Eager
We were energized and eager to continue to develop as a band, so we set out to write our most melodic stuff to date. Not only had we set our sights on composing massive anthems, but we had also matured as individuals and as a group, and we felt the need to write more explicit and honest lyrics.
We were on the road for the majority of the time at the time and had to take advantage of any writing opportunities that presented itself whenever and wherever we could, Liam explains. In the beginning, there was only one idea: a song composed as if it were a discussion between me and the audience.
Runaway was written in the front room of our tour manager’s house in Leeds, where we spent a lot of time together during this period of our lives. Because Leeds is the home of Slam Dunk, musicians from the scene came through regularly, with the majority of them living at this house. We were right in the middle of things!
Time is Tonic
Difficulty is only temporary, and time is a tonic. It came about a week before I was scheduled to go to the studio. I would like to say some things and get them off my chest,’ began the opening line, which was inspired by the material we had so far.
With the material we had so far, we knew we needed a solid opener to match the rest of the record. We decided to record at Middle Farm Studios, a new studio run by producer Peter Miles and located in the hills of Devonshire, far away from the rest of the world.
Middle Of December
Earlier in the year, Pete had attended a show with us, and we had the opportunity to talk about the upcoming album and share ideas with him. As a result of our meeting, we decided to work with him on our second album, GNAL, which we began recording in the middle of December while trapped inside by snow.
